The Crisis of Displacement: Why Housing First is the Only Viable Solution to Homelessness

Homelessness is often framed as a peripheral issue of urban life, a tragic but inevitable consequence of individual misfortune or personal failure. However, this perspective overlooks the structural and systemic realities that drive the crisis. In the United States and many other developed nations, homelessness has reached a tipping point, exacerbated by skyrocketing rent, stagnant wages, and a fraying social safety net. While traditional approaches to the problem have focused on "treatment first" models, which require individuals to achieve sobriety or mental stability before qualifying for permanent housing, these methods have largely failed. To effectively end homelessness, society must adopt the Housing First model, which recognizes that stable, permanent housing is a fundamental human right and the essential prerequisite for addressing all other personal and social challenges.

The Economic Efficiency of Permanent Supportive Housing

A common argument against providing universal housing for the homeless is the perceived cost to the taxpayer. Critics often suggest that the public cannot afford to "give away" apartments.
