The Biological Mechanism of Dependency
At its core, addiction is a neurological process that alters how the brain functions. When a person uses a substance or engages in a compulsive behavior, the brain releases a chemical called dopamine. This chemical creates a feeling of intense pleasure or a reward. Over time, the brain becomes accustomed to these high levels of dopamine and begins to crave them constantly. Eventually, the person needs more of the substance just to feel normal.
