As global temperatures continue to rise, scientists are increasingly concerned about how these massive storms are evolving. The primary driver of increased hurricane intensity is the rising temperature of the world’s oceans. Hurricanes act like giant heat engines that pull energy from warm surface waters to power their circular winds. Because of climate change, the top layer of the ocean is absorbing more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped in the atmosphere. This extra thermal energy provides the high-octane fuel needed for a storm to grow from a weak tropical depression into a catastrophic Category 4 or 5 hurricane. When the water is hotter, the potential for higher wind speeds increases, leading to greater structural damage when the storm eventually makes landfall.
