These government-led strategies aim to protect the environment by setting clear rules for industries and providing incentives for the development of cleaner technology. Without a strong framework of laws, the transition to a sustainable future would be too slow to prevent serious ecological damage.

One primary way governments address the health of the climate is through direct regulation. These are often called command and control policies because they set specific, legal limits on how much pollution a company or industry can produce. For example, many countries have implemented strict fuel efficiency standards for vehicles. These regulations force car manufacturers to design engines that use less gasoline and emit fewer harmful fumes. By setting a legal bar that every business must meet, regulation ensures that no single company gains a competitive advantage by ignoring the health of the planet.

Beyond simple rules, climate change policy and regulation also use economic incentives to drive change. Instead of just banning certain behaviors, governments can make it more expensive to pollute or cheaper to be green. A carbon tax is a common example; it places a fee on the carbon content of fuels. When it becomes more expensive to use coal or oil, businesses naturally look for alternatives like wind or solar power to save money. Additionally, governments often provide subsidies or tax breaks to families who install solar panels on their homes. These policies make the transition to clean energy more affordable and attractive for the average person.
