By destroying these vast green spaces, humanity is not only losing a vital natural resource but is also actively accelerating the greenhouse effect.

The most direct link between deforestation and climate change involves the carbon cycle. Trees are natural carbon sinks, meaning they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and store it in their trunks, branches, and roots. When forests are cleared or burned, this stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. This process creates a double blow to the environment. First, the planet loses its natural ability to absorb future emissions; second, it receives a massive surge of legacy carbon that has been stored for decades. This accumulation of gases traps heat in the atmosphere, leading to the steady rise in global temperatures.

Beyond carbon storage, forests play a fundamental role in regulating the local environment and global water cycles. Trees release moisture into the air through a process called transpiration, which helps form clouds and produce rainfall. When large areas of forest are removed, the surrounding land becomes significantly drier. This change can lead to more frequent droughts and higher surface temperatures, which can transform once lush regions into arid landscapes. This shift creates a dangerous feedback loop: as the climate becomes hotter and drier, the remaining forests become more susceptible to wildfires, which then release even more carbon into the atmosphere.
