Gurpurab is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism, marking the birth anniversaries of the ten Sikh Gurus who shaped the faith. While several such anniversaries are celebrated throughout the lunar calendar, the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, holds the most prominence. This day is far more than a simple religious holiday; it is a profound celebration of truth, humanity, and divine devotion. It serves as an annual reminder of the spiritual light the Gurus brought to a world often clouded by division and ignorance.

The celebrations typically begin days in advance with Prabhat Pheris, which are early morning processions where devotees walk through their neighborhoods singing hymns. A central ritual of any Gurpurab is the Akhand Path, a forty-eight-hour continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture. This marathon recitation creates a meditative and peaceful atmosphere within the Gurdwara. On the day of the festival, the holy book is often carried in a grand procession known as the Nagar Kirtan. The concept of Langar, or the free community kitchen, is a cornerstone of the festivities.
