The Kargil War remains a significant chapter in the modern history of South Asia. Fought in the summer of 1999, this conflict between India and Pakistan took place in the rugged, high-altitude terrain of the Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir. Unlike previous wars between the two nations, this struggle was defined by extreme weather and vertical battlefields. It began when Pakistani soldiers and insurgents crossed the Line of Control, occupying strategic peaks that overlooked crucial Indian supply routes. This prompted a massive military response from India known as Operation Vijay, aimed at reclaiming the occupied territories.

Geography and the Challenges of Mountain Warfare

The geography of the region played a decisive role in the nature of the war. Most of the fighting occurred at elevations exceeding 15,000 feet, where oxygen is scarce and temperatures drop well below freezing. During the winter of 1998 to 1999, Pakistani forces secretly moved into vacated Indian outposts.
