The New Education Policy 2020 marks a significant turning point for the Indian school system. Introduced by the Ministry of Education, this policy replaces the outdated 1986 framework that governed schools for over three decades. Its primary goal is to transform India into a global knowledge superpower by making education more holistic, flexible, and suited to the needs of the twenty-first century. By moving away from a system based on rote memorization, the new framework seeks to create a more inclusive and engaging learning environment for every student.

One of the most visible changes introduced by the New Education Policy 2020 is the restructuring of the school system. The traditional 10+2 model has been replaced by a 5+3+3+4 pedagogical structure. This new arrangement covers children from the ages of three to eighteen, bringing early childhood education under formal regulation for the first time. By focusing on the foundational years, the policy recognizes that the first few years of a child's life are critical for cognitive development. This stage emphasizes play-based and activity-based learning, ensuring that young learners develop a strong base in literacy and numeracy before moving to higher grades.

Another critical aspect of the policy is the promotion of multidisciplinary learning and the removal of rigid academic boundaries. In the previous system, students were often forced to choose between narrow streams like Science, Commerce, or Arts after class ten. The New Education Policy 2020 eliminates these silos, allowing students to mix and match subjects based on their interests. For example, a student can now choose to study physics alongside history or fashion design.
