The Technology of Detection

Understanding the discovery of gravitational waves requires looking at the specialized technology used to find them. Scientists spent decades building and refining the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, commonly known as LIGO. This facility consists of two massive, L-shaped detectors located thousands of miles apart in Washington and Louisiana. Inside these long tunnels, lasers measure distances with a level of precision that is difficult to imagine.
