Oxygen is the most essential element for human life, yet its existence as a distinct gas remained a mystery for centuries. The discovery of oxygen in the late 1700s marked a major turning point in human history, moving science away from ancient myths toward the clarity of modern chemistry. This breakthrough was not the work of a single person but rather a competitive race between brilliant minds across Europe. By identifying this vital gas, researchers changed how we understand fire, breathing, and the very composition of the world around us.

The formal journey toward the discovery of oxygen began with two scientists working independently: Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Joseph Priestley. In the early 1770s, Scheele, a Swedish pharmacist, produced the gas by heating various chemical compounds, though his findings were not published immediately. Shortly after, in 1774, the English chemist Joseph Priestley conducted a famous experiment using a magnifying glass to heat mercuric oxide. He noticed that the resulting gas made candles burn brighter and allowed mice to live longer in a sealed container. Priestley called this substance dephlogisticated air, believing it was simply air stripped of a fire-like element called phlogiston.

While Priestley and Scheele observed the gas, it was Antoine Lavoisier, a French chemist, who truly understood its significance. Lavoisier realized that the discovery of oxygen proved that air was not a single element but a mixture of different gases. He rejected the outdated phlogiston theory, which had confused scientists for decades. In 1777, Lavoisier gave the gas its modern name, oxygen, derived from Greek words meaning acid-former. His rigorous experiments showed that combustion and respiration were actually chemical reactions with oxygen. This shift in thinking laid the foundation for the chemical revolution, establishing the law of conservation of mass.
