The discovery of photosynthesis is one of the most significant chapters in the history of science. While we now take for granted that plants use sunlight to create food, this process remained a mystery for thousands of years. Early thinkers believed that plants simply consumed soil to grow, much like animals eat food. However, through a series of clever experiments spanning several centuries, researchers uncovered a complex chemical process that sustains almost all life on our planet. Early Experiments and the Role of Water

The first major step toward understanding this process occurred in the 17th century with the work of Jan Baptista van Helmont. He conducted a famous experiment by planting a willow tree in a large pot of soil. He tracked the weight of the tree and the weight of the soil for five years, adding only water. When the tree grew significantly while the soil weight remained nearly the same, he proved that plants do not gain their mass from the earth alone. Although he incorrectly concluded that water was the sole source of a plant's growth, his work was vital. It shifted the scientific focus away from the ground and toward the invisible elements surrounding the plant, setting the stage for future breakthroughs.
