The term "sociology" was first coined by the French philosopher Auguste Comte in the 1830s. Comte believed that society could be studied using the same rigorous methods used in physics or biology. He lived through the aftermath of the French Revolution, a time when old traditions were collapsing. By applying scientific logic to human behavior, he hoped to discover the laws that govern social order and progress. Other early thinkers, such as Harriet Martineau, expanded this work by translating these ideas for a wider audience and highlighting the importance of observing daily life, including the roles of women and the dynamics of family.
