It is a technique used to prove that a specific statement or formula is true for every natural number in an infinite sequence. While many mathematical concepts can feel abstract or disconnected from reality, induction relies on a very intuitive logic: the chain reaction. By establishing a starting point and a reliable connection between steps, mathematicians can draw conclusions about an endless series of numbers without having to test each one individually.

The process of mathematical induction begins with what is known as the base case. This step involves proving that the statement is true for the very first number in the set, which is usually the number one. Think of this like the first domino in a long row. If the first domino does not fall, the rest of the chain will never be set into motion. By verifying this initial step, we provide a solid foundation for the rest of the proof. Without a successful base case, the entire logical structure would collapse, as there would be no guaranteed starting point for the truth of the claim.

Once the base case is established, the next phase is the inductive step. This is the core of the method, where we show that if the statement holds true for any arbitrary number, let us call it $k$, then it must also be true for the next number, $k+1$. This step creates a logical bridge. We are not necessarily proving that the statement is true for every number all at once; rather, we are proving that the truth is "contagious." If the property moves from one number to the next, and we already know it started at the first number, then it must eventually reach every single number in the sequence.
