Growth refers to the physical increase in a plant’s size and mass over time, while development encompasses the various stages and transitions a plant undergoes throughout its life cycle. Understanding these mechanisms is not just a scientific pursuit; it is a necessity for solving modern social issues related to food security and environmental health.

At its core, plant growth is driven by the production and expansion of new cells. This process occurs primarily in specialized areas called meristems, which are located at the tips of roots and shoots. Through cell division, a plant creates the building blocks it needs to expand its physical footprint. Once new cells are formed, they undergo elongation, stretching out to increase the plant's height and width. External factors such as soil quality, temperature, and light intensity play a crucial role in this phase. Without the proper balance of water and sunlight, a plant cannot produce the energy required for this expansion. This physical increase in size is the most visible sign of a healthy, thriving organism.

While growth is about size, development is about complexity and change. This process begins with germination, where a dormant seed responds to moisture and warmth to begin its life.
