The Foundation of Earth’s History

Earth’s crust is a dynamic environment, yet the most visible story of our planet’s past is written in sedimentary rocks. Unlike igneous rocks that form from cooling magma or metamorphic rocks shaped by intense heat, sedimentary rocks are created at or near the Earth’s surface. They cover approximately 75 percent of the land surface, forming the landscapes we see in canyons, riverbeds, and coastal cliffs. These rocks are more than just compressed dirt; they are the primary record-keepers of geological time, capturing the environmental conditions of the world as it existed millions of years ago.

The Process of Formation and Classification

The creation of sedimentary rocks begins with the mechanical and chemical breakdown of pre-existing materials. Through a process called weathering, larger rocks are broken into smaller fragments like sand, silt, and clay. These particles are then transported by water, wind, or ice and deposited in layers. Over vast periods, the weight of overlying material squeezes the lower layers, and minerals acting as natural glue cement the particles together. Geologists generally classify these rocks into three groups: clastic, chemical, and organic. Clastic rocks, such as sandstone, are made from pieces of other rocks. Chemical rocks, like rock salt, form when minerals settle out of water. Organic rocks, such as coal, are composed of the remains of plants and animals.
