On June 17, 1775, the hills overlooking Boston became the site of the first major conflict of the American Revolutionary War. Known as the Battle of Bunker Hill, this engagement took place during the early months of the siege of Boston. Although the British army ultimately captured the ground, the battle served as a powerful symbol of colonial resistance. It demonstrated that the untrained American militia could stand their ground against the most professional military force in the world. This event transformed a local uprising into a determined, organized struggle for independence.
The conflict began when colonial forces learned of British plans to occupy the hills surrounding the city. To prevent this, colonial troops moved under the cover of night to fortify the Charlestown Peninsula. Interestingly, most of the fighting actually occurred on Breed's Hill, which was lower and closer to the British positions than the actual Bunker Hill. By digging trenches and building earthen walls overnight, the colonists forced the British into a direct confrontation. Control of this hill meant control over the harbor, making it a vital piece of territory for both sides.
