Modern food production has undergone a massive transformation over the last century, moving from small family plots to massive industrial complexes. While these systems provide a large amount of meat at a low cost, the environmental impact of factory farming has become a significant concern for scientists and citizens alike. These facilities, often called Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, house thousands of animals in confined spaces to maximize efficiency. However, this industrial approach creates a heavy burden on our planet. By examining waste management issues and atmospheric emissions, we can better understand why a shift toward sustainable alternatives is necessary for the health of our world.

Water Pollution and Waste Management

One of the most immediate problems created by factory farming is the disposal of animal waste. In a natural farm setting, manure acts as a helpful fertilizer for crops. However, on a large-scale pig or cattle farm, the sheer volume of waste is overwhelming. These facilities often store millions of gallons of liquid manure in massive open-air pits known as lagoons. When heavy rains occur or these pits leak, the waste flows into nearby streams and rivers. This runoff contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, which trigger toxic algae blooms. These blooms deplete oxygen in the water, leading to "dead zones" where fish and other aquatic life cannot survive. This creates a lasting negative environmental impact on local ecosystems and clean water supplies.
