From simple clay tokens in ancient Mesopotamia to the complex digital systems used today, the evolution of financial record-keeping has mirrored the growth of human society. Understanding how we track wealth helps us understand how the modern world was built.
Ancient Origins and the Birth of Writing
Long before the invention of the alphabet, people used accounting to manage trade and agriculture. In ancient Mesopotamia, around 5,000 years ago, merchants used small clay tokens to represent goods such as sheep, grain, or jars of oil. These tokens were often stored in clay envelopes. Eventually, merchants began making markings on the outside of these containers to indicate what was inside without breaking the seal. Many historians believe that this specific need to record transactions actually led to the development of the first writing systems. In this sense, accounting was not just a byproduct of culture; it was a primary driver of human literacy and the formalization of language.
