Human beings have always been curious about why they act differently in groups than they do alone. However, the formal history of sociology as a distinct field of study is relatively young. It began in the nineteenth century during a time of great upheaval. As traditional ways of life vanished, thinkers realized they needed a systematic way to understand how societies function and stay organized. The history of sociology is the story of how scholars moved from simple observation to a rigorous scientific study of human behavior, responding to the massive changes that shaped the modern world.

The Industrial Revolution and Early Thinkers

The primary spark for the history of sociology was the Industrial Revolution in Europe. During the 1800s, millions of people moved from rural farms to crowded cities to work in new factories. This shift caused massive social problems, including extreme poverty, crime, and the breakdown of long standing community ties. Auguste Comte, a French philosopher, believed that society could be studied using the same logical methods used in physics or biology. He coined the term sociology and argued that by discovering the laws of social behavior, humans could build a more stable world. His work laid the groundwork for seeing society as a system that follows predictable rules.
