The invention of the transistor and the digital age are inextricably linked because this single piece of hardware allowed scientists to shrink computers from the size of a room to the palm of a hand. From Vacuum Tubes to Solid State

The story of the transistor began in 1947 at Bell Labs, where scientists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley sought a better way to control electrical signals. Before this invention, electronic machines relied on vacuum tubes. These tubes looked like glowing glass light bulbs; they were hot, consumed enormous amounts of power, and burned out frequently. The transistor changed the field of science by offering a "solid-state" alternative. Because it was made from semiconducting materials like germanium and later silicon, it had no moving parts, required no warm-up time, and produced very little heat. This new device could act as both an amplifier and a switch, performing the same tasks as a vacuum tube but in a fraction of the space.
