Humans have always looked toward the stars with wonder, but Mars is no longer just a distant point of light in the night sky. It has become the primary target for the future of space exploration. However, the dream of becoming a multi-planetary species comes with significant risks that extend far beyond the journey itself. The major challenges of living on Mars involve more than just technical engineering; they involve surviving a world that is fundamentally hostile to human life. From the lack of breathable air to the psychological strain of extreme distance, colonists will face obstacles that test the very limits of human endurance.

The most immediate threat to survival is the Martian environment. Unlike Earth, Mars has a very thin atmosphere composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide. Because there is no oxygen to breathe, humans would be forced to live inside pressurized habitats or wear heavy spacesuits whenever they step outside. Furthermore, Mars lacks a global magnetic field to shield the surface from harmful solar radiation. Without this natural protection, settlers would face significantly higher risks of cancer and organ damage. To overcome these major challenges, early residents would likely need to build their homes underground or cover them with thick layers of Martian soil to block the constant barrage of cosmic rays.

Beyond the harsh atmosphere, the physical effects of low gravity pose long-term risks to the human body. Mars has only about 38 percent of Earth's gravity.
