Light is one of the most familiar yet mysterious parts of our daily lives. For centuries, the greatest minds in science debated a fundamental question: Is light a wave or is it a particle? Some argued that it moved like ripples in a pond, while others insisted it was composed of tiny, solid projectiles. Eventually, researchers realized that light does not fit into just one category. This concept, known as the wave-particle duality of light, suggests that light possesses both wave-like and particle-like properties. This discovery revolutionized modern physics and challenged our basic understanding of how the physical world operates.

The evidence for light acting as a wave is rooted in how it moves through space. Just like sound or water ripples, light waves can spread out and overlap. In the early 1800s, a scientist named Thomas Young conducted the famous double-slit experiment to prove this theory. He shone light through two narrow, parallel slits and observed the pattern it created on a distant screen. Instead of seeing two bright lines, he saw a series of light and dark bands. This interference pattern occurs because waves can either add together to become brighter or cancel each other out to create darkness. This behavior confirmed that light flows through the environment as a continuous, vibrating wave.

However, light also behaves like a stream of distinct particles called photons. This characteristic became clear through the study of the photoelectric effect, a phenomenon where light hitting a metal surface causes it to eject electrons. If light were only a wave, the energy would build up slowly over time. Instead, scientists discovered that electrons are only released when the light reaches a specific frequency, regardless of how bright it is. Albert Einstein explained that light arrives in discrete "packets" of energy. Much like tiny pebbles hitting a surface, these photons provide the concentrated punch needed to knock electrons loose. This discovery proved that light has a physical, particle-like side.
