The primary difference between a religious studies scholar and a theologian lies in their perspective: one works from within a faith tradition, while the other observes it from the outside as a human phenomenon.

The Perspective of the Theologian

A theologian is typically an "insider" who writes and thinks from the perspective of a specific faith. Their work usually begins with the assumption that the teachings of their religion are true. For example, a Christian theologian might study the Bible to better understand the nature of God or to help their community live a more ethical life. Their goal is often to deepen the faith of believers or to clarify the official positions of a religious institution. Because they are committed to the tradition they study, their work is often used to provide spiritual guidance and to answer deep questions about the meaning of life from a specific religious viewpoint.
