While these subjects might seem identical at first glance, they represent two very different ways of looking at the world. The primary difference between religious studies and theology lies in the perspective of the observer. Theology generally looks at faith from the "inside out," while religious studies examines it from the "outside in."

The Insider Perspective of Theology

Theology is traditionally defined as the study of God or the divine. The word itself comes from the Greek words "theos," meaning God, and "logos," meaning word or study. Most people who practice theology do so from within a specific faith tradition. For example, a student of Christian theology or Islamic theology usually starts with the belief that their religion is true. Their goal is to understand the nature of God, the meaning of sacred texts, and how to live according to their faith’s requirements. Because it is an "insider" perspective, theology is often used to train religious leaders or to help believers deepen their spiritual lives. It asks deep questions about truth, morality, and the nature of existence based on the teachings of a specific church or tradition.
