The Evolution of Religious Inquiry

Religious studies is a unique academic field that explores how humans practice and understand faith across different cultures. Unlike theology, which often focuses on the internal truths and doctrines of a specific religion, religious studies looks at faith from an objective, outside perspective. The history of religious studies reflects a significant shift from religious instruction to scientific observation. It began as a way to compare various cultures and has since grown into a global discipline that examines the complex role of faith in human life.

The Birth of the Comparative Method

The formal history of this field began in the late nineteenth century. Before this period, most academic work regarding religion was conducted by members of a specific church to support their own beliefs. However, scholars like Friedrich Max Müller argued for a more objective approach, which he called the Science of Religion. Müller famously stated that he who knows only one religion actually knows none. This period introduced the comparative method, where researchers looked for similarities and differences between Eastern and Western traditions. This was a revolutionary step toward treating religion as a human phenomenon that could be studied just like language or history.
