The Historical Legacy of Fossil Fuels

Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, the world has relied on coal, oil, and natural gas to power human progress. This long history is a major reason why fossil fuels remain the primary global energy source today. For over two centuries, societies have designed their cities, transportation systems, and factories specifically to run on these fuels. Because they were the first sources to be widely adopted, they have a massive head start over modern alternatives. This historical momentum has created a world that is deeply intertwined with carbon-based energy, making it a challenge to switch to new systems overnight.

Established Infrastructure and Energy Density

A primary reason for the continued dominance of fossil fuels is the massive existing infrastructure. Across the globe, there are millions of miles of pipelines, thousands of power plants, and a vast network of gas stations already in place. Replacing this hardware requires trillions of dollars and decades of construction. Furthermore, fossil fuels possess a high level of energy density. This means that a small amount of coal or oil contains a large amount of energy. Unlike solar or wind power, which can be intermittent depending on the weather, fossil fuels provide a steady and concentrated flow of power that is easy to store and transport using our current technology.
