The landscape of contemporary social justice has shifted significantly from the singular focus of earlier waves. At the heart of this evolution is the realization that "woman" is not a monolithic category. To understand why intersectionality is crucial for modern feminism, one must look to the framework established by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. Intersectionality describes how various social identities, such as race, class, and gender, overlap to create unique modes of discrimination and privilege. Without this lens, the pursuit of gender equality remains incomplete, as it risks advocating only for those who already hold the most social capital.

However, a Black woman does not experience sexism and racism as separate, additive forces; rather, they fuse into a distinct form of "misogynoir."
