The term democracy originates from the Greek words "demos," meaning people, and "kratos," meaning power. At its most fundamental level, democracy is a system of government in which supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation. While the concept has evolved significantly over two and a half millennia, its core premise remains the same: the governed should have a meaningful voice in the laws and policies that shape their lives. Understanding democracy requires an examination of its historical development, its foundational pillars, the mechanisms that allow it to function, and the contemporary challenges that test its resilience.

The Historical Evolution of Democratic Thought

The roots of democratic practice are most famously traced to the city-state of Athens in the fifth century BCE. Athenian democracy was a direct system where eligible citizens, though a limited group that excluded women, enslaved people, and foreigners, gathered to debate and vote on legislation. This model established the precedent that political legitimacy flows from the collective will of the citizenry rather than divine right or hereditary succession. However, as societies grew in size and complexity, the direct model became geographically and logistically impractical for large nation-states.
