Expository Essay on Global Warming
The phenomenon of global warming represents one of the most documented and significant shifts in the Earth’s biosphere since the end of the last ice age. While the planet’s temperature has fluctuated naturally over millions of years, the current period of warming is distinct due to its rapid pace and its primary correlation with human industrial activity. Global warming refers specifically to the long term increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system, an aspect of climate change demonstrated by direct temperature measurements and by measurements of various effects of the warming. By examining the mechanisms of the greenhouse effect, the primary drivers of temperature increases, and the resulting environmental consequences, one can gain a comprehensive understanding of this global shift.
The Mechanisms of the Greenhouse Effect
To understand global warming, one must first understand the greenhouse effect, a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. When the sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. These gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the Earth, maintaining a temperature that permits life as we know it.
