Defining the Global Obesity Epidemic

Obesity is no longer viewed merely as a matter of individual willpower or aesthetic concern; rather, it is recognized by major health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), as a complex, chronic disease. At its most fundamental level, obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat that presents a risk to health. The most common tool for screening this condition is the Body Mass Index (BMI), a simple index of weight-for-height. For adults, the WHO defines obesity as a BMI greater than or equal to 30. While BMI is a useful population-level measure, it does not account for the distribution of fat or the proportion of muscle mass, necessitating a deeper clinical understanding of the condition.
