Unemployment is a fundamental macroeconomic indicator that measures the extent to which individuals in an economy who are willing and able to work cannot find gainful employment. While it is often discussed in political and social contexts, it is primarily a metric of economic efficiency and labor market health. High levels of unemployment suggest that an economy is not utilizing its human resources effectively, leading to a loss of potential output. Conversely, extremely low unemployment can signal an overheating economy where labor shortages drive up inflation. Understanding unemployment requires a deep dive into how it is measured, the distinct categories it falls into, its underlying causes, and the broad consequences it exerts on both individuals and the state.

Defining and Measuring the Labor Force

To understand unemployment, one must first understand the definition of the labor force. Economists typically divide the adult population into three categories: the employed, the unemployed, and those not in the labor force. An individual is considered employed if they have spent any part of the previous week working for pay. An individual is considered unemployed only if they are currently without a job, are available for work, and have actively sought employment within the last four weeks.
