Narrative Essay on Bullying

The Weight of the Hallway

The linoleum floors of Lincoln High School always smelled of industrial lemon cleaner and damp wool. To most students, that scent was merely the backdrop of their teenage years, a mundane sensory detail of a Tuesday morning. For me, however, it was the scent of a battlefield. Every morning, as the heavy glass doors swung shut behind me, the air seemed to thicken. I would adjust the straps of my backpack, pulling them tight against my chest like a suit of armor, and begin the long walk toward locker 412.

Bullying is rarely the cinematic explosion of lockers and black eyes that television portrays. Instead, it is a slow, methodical erosion of one’s sense of self. It is the tactical removal of dignity, performed in the quiet spaces where teachers do not look and peers are too afraid to speak. My primary antagonist was a boy named Marcus. He was not a monster in the traditional sense; he was charismatic, athletic, and possessed a smile that could disarm most adults. But in the hallways, that smile turned into something predatory.
