The Intersection of Race and Disability in Special Education

The nexus of race and disability within American schools represents a critical frontier for educational equity. Intersectionality in special education: addressing race and disability in ieps requires a departure from the traditional medical model of disability, which often ignores the sociocultural dimensions of student identity. When a student’s cultural expression deviates from these norms, schools may pathologize that difference rather than adjusting the instructional environment. Such misidentification leads to more restrictive placements, removing students from the general education setting and limiting their access to the rigorous curricula essential for post-secondary success.
