The term euthanasia derives from the Greek words "eu," meaning good, and "thanatos," meaning death. In contemporary medical and legal discourse, it refers to the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering, typically in the context of a terminal illness or an incurable condition. While the concept is often discussed as a singular practice, it is categorized into several distinct types based on the level of consent and the nature of the action taken by the medical professional.

The primary distinction in the field is between active and passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia involves a deliberate act to end the patient’s life, such as the administration of a lethal injection by a physician. In contrast, passive euthanasia occurs when life-sustaining treatments are withheld or withdrawn, allowing the patient to die from their underlying condition. Common examples of passive euthanasia include the removal of a ventilator or the decision not to perform a life-saving surgery on a patient with a terminal prognosis.
