The Definition and Origins of Communist Ideology

Communism is a socio-economic and political ideology that advocates for a classless, stateless society in which the means of production are owned collectively. At its core, the philosophy seeks to eliminate the perceived exploitation inherent in capitalist systems by replacing private property and profit-based motives with a system of common ownership and distribution based on need. While the roots of communal living can be traced back to ancient societies and certain religious sects, modern communism emerged as a rigorous theoretical framework during the nineteenth century in response to the Industrial Revolution.

The foundational text of this movement is The Communist Manifesto, published in 1848 by German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Marx and Engels developed a theory known as historical materialism, which posits that the economic structure of a society determines its social and political superstructure. They argued that history is a series of class struggles between the "bourgeoisie," who own the means of production such as factories and land, and the "proletariat," the working class who must sell their labor to survive. According to Marxist theory, the internal contradictions of capitalism, specifically the accumulation of wealth by a few at the expense of the many, would inevitably lead to a proletarian revolution. This revolution would dismantle the capitalist state and usher in a transitional phase known as socialism, eventually culminating in a fully realized communist society.
