The Definition and Scope of Drug Abuse

Drug abuse, often referred to in clinical settings as substance use disorder, represents one of the most persistent challenges to global public health. At its core, drug abuse is the patterned use of a substance in which the user consumes the drug in amounts or with methods that are harmful to themselves or others. While the term is frequently associated with illegal narcotics such as heroin or cocaine, it also encompasses the misuse of legal substances, including alcohol, tobacco, and prescription medications. The transition from recreational use to abuse is marked by a shift where the substance begins to interfere with an individual’s daily responsibilities, physical health, and interpersonal relationships.

Understanding drug abuse requires a distinction between use, abuse, and physical dependence. While use may be sporadic or socially integrated, abuse involves a maladaptive pattern of consumption that leads to significant impairment. Dependence, on the other hand, is a physiological state where the body requires the drug to function normally, often leading to withdrawal symptoms upon cessation. Because drug abuse affects the individual on biological, psychological, and social levels, it is categorized by the medical community as a chronic, relapsing brain disease. This classification highlights that while the initial decision to take drugs may be voluntary, the subsequent changes in the brain can erode a person's self control and ability to make sound decisions.
