Reflective Essay on Education

The Shift from Schooling to Learning

For many years, I viewed education as a linear path marked by the ringing of bells and the turning of textbook pages. Like many students, I conflated "schooling" with "education," assuming that the accumulation of high marks and certificates was the primary goal of the intellectual journey. However, as I transitioned from the rigid structures of secondary school to the more fluid environment of higher education, my perception underwent a fundamental shift. I began to realize that while schooling is a structured service provided by an institution, education is a personal, lifelong commitment to curiosity and critical thinking.

This realization began during a particularly challenging history seminar. Up until that point, I had treated history as a series of dates to be memorized and regurgitated. I was a passive recipient of information, what the philosopher Paulo Freire famously described as the "banking model" of education. In this model, students are empty containers to be filled by the teacher. However, when my professor asked us not just what happened, but why certain narratives were omitted from our textbooks, the "container" cracked. I was no longer just absorbing facts; I was evaluating the source, the bias, and the silence between the lines. This was my first true taste of active learning. It taught me that education is not about finding the right answer, but about developing the courage to ask the right questions.
