The Evolution of a Leader: From Authority to Influence
For a long time, my perception of leadership was inextricably linked to the concept of the "Great Man" theory. I believed that leaders were born with a certain set of immutable traits: a booming voice, an unwavering sense of certainty, and a natural ability to command a room. In my early academic years, I viewed leadership as a destination or a title one achieved rather than a skill set one cultivated. However, through a series of personal challenges and academic explorations, my understanding has shifted from viewing leadership as a position of power to seeing it as a practice of influence, empathy, and accountability.
This transition began during my first significant leadership role as the coordinator for a regional community service project. At the time, I equated leadership with management. I spent my energy creating rigid schedules, assigning tasks without consultation, and measuring success solely through the completion of checklists. While the project was technically successful, the atmosphere among the volunteers was strained. I had focused so intently on the "what" of the project that I had entirely neglected the "who." This experience served as a catalyst for a deeper reflection on what it truly means to guide a group toward a common goal. I realized that while authority can demand compliance, only true leadership can inspire commitment.
