The core of the compatibilist argument lies in the distinction between internal desires and external constraints. If a person acts due to an external force, such as physical coercion, they lack responsibility. However, if their action stems from internal deliberations and desires, the action is free in the sense that matters for morality. Even if those internal desires are themselves determined by biology or upbringing, they still constitute the individual's identity and agency.
