In the mid 1800s, an Austrian monk named Gregor Mendel transformed our understanding of how life passes from one generation to the next. By studying thousands of pea plants, he uncovered the fundamental principles of mendelian genetics: the foundation of heredity. His meticulous research moved science away from vague theories about "blending" traits and toward a precise, mathematical model of inheritance.
Dominant Traits and Genetic Coding
Mendel discovered that traits are determined by individual units, now called genes. He observed that some traits, such as purple flowers, are "dominant," while others, such as white flowers, are "recessive." A plant's genetic makeup, or "genotype," consists of two versions of a gene. If a plant has at least one dominant version, its physical appearance, or "phenotype," will show that dominant trait. The recessive trait only appears if the plant lacks the dominant version entirely. This distinction between what an organism carries in its DNA and what it actually looks like is a cornerstone of biological science.
