Understanding the Architecture of the Human Mind
Human beings have always been fascinated by why we do what we do. Since the dawn of civilization, we have tried to categorize people into different groups. The ancient Greeks believed that our temperaments were decided by "humors" or bodily fluids. Later, people looked to the stars or to the shapes of their skulls to understand their characters. However, modern psychology has moved away from these mystical or physical guesses toward a more data-driven approach. Today, the most widely accepted and scientifically supported framework for understanding who we are is the Big Five personality traits: an introduction to the five-factor model.
This model does not try to put people into narrow boxes, such as "introvert" or "extrovert," as if those were the only two options. Instead, it suggests that personality is made up of five broad dimensions that exist on a sliding scale. Every person has a certain amount of each trait. By measuring where an individual falls on these five scales, psychologists can create a detailed "map" of their personality. This system, often referred to by the acronym OCEAN, has become the gold standard in personality psychology because it is based on decades of research involving hundreds of thousands of people across different cultures and languages.
