The chemistry of climate change: greenhouse gases and ocean acidification involves the specific ways certain molecules interact with solar energy and seawater. By examining the structure of greenhouse gases and the subsequent acidification of the seas, we can understand the mechanical drivers of contemporary environmental shifts.

Vibrational States and Heat Entrapment

At the molecular level, the greenhouse effect is a result of vibrational symmetry and energy absorption. Unlike the primary components of our atmosphere, such as nitrogen ($N_2$) or oxygen ($O_2$), greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and methane ($CH_4$) possess more than two atoms or are heteronuclear. This structural complexity allows them to undergo bending and stretching vibrations that match the frequency of infrared radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface. When a $CO_2$ molecule absorbs this energy, it enters an excited vibrational state before re-emitting the heat in all directions, including back toward the ground. Methane is even more potent in this regard; its four carbon-hydrogen bonds provide multiple vibrational modes, making it significantly more efficient at trapping thermal energy within the troposphere.
