When these molecules intercept outgoing longwave radiation from the Earth, they re-emit energy back toward the surface, effectively trapping heat. Atmospheric Carbon and Marine Equilibrium

The impact of rising CO2 extends beyond the atmosphere into the hydrosphere. As the ocean absorbs roughly thirty percent of anthropogenic CO2, a critical chemical shift occurs. CO2 reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid (H2CO3), which subsequently dissociates into hydrogen and bicarbonate ions. This process, known as ocean acidification, lowers the pH of the water. Crucially, the excess hydrogen ions bond with carbonate ions, making them unavailable for marine organisms. This depletion hinders the ability of coral reefs and mollusks to synthesize calcium carbonate skeletons, threatening the structural integrity of entire marine ecosystems.
