The importance of controlled variables in experimental design is fundamental because these constants allow scientists to claim that their results are valid. Defining the Variables

In any study, there are three main types of variables: independent, dependent, and controlled. The independent variable is the factor that the researcher intentionally changes, such as the amount of light a plant receives. The dependent variable is the result being measured, such as how tall the plant grows. However, for the experiment to be fair, every other factor must be a controlled variable. These are the elements that stay exactly the same for every subject, such as the type of soil, the amount of water, and the temperature of the room. By keeping these factors constant, the scientist ensures that any change in the plant’s height is strictly due to the light and nothing else.
