When a scientist wants to know if a specific fertilizer makes a tomato plant grow taller, they do not simply throw the fertilizer on a random plant and hope for the best. Instead, they design a controlled experiment. The importance of controlled variables in experimental design cannot be overstated; these factors ensure that the results of an investigation are actually caused by the changes the scientist made, rather than by random chance or outside influences.

To understand why control is so vital, one must first understand the three main components of any experiment: the independent variable, the dependent variable, and the controlled variables. The independent variable is the one factor that the researcher intentionally changes. In the tomato plant example, the independent variable is the type or amount of fertilizer used. The dependent variable is what the researcher measures to see the effect of that change, such as the height of the plant in centimeters. Finally, the controlled variables are every other factor that must stay exactly the same throughout the experiment. If a researcher fails to keep these elements constant, the entire experiment loses its credibility.
