On December 25, 2021, the Ariane 5 rocket ascended from the Guiana Space Centre, carrying with it the most sophisticated scientific instrument ever constructed by humanity. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) represented more than three decades of international collaboration, engineering ingenuity, and a staggering investment of nearly ten billion dollars. Its primary objective was as ambitious as its price tag: to peer back through thirteen billion years of cosmic history to witness the birth of the first stars and galaxies. By capturing light that has been traveling across the vacuum of space since the infancy of the cosmos, the James Webb Space Telescope and the origins of the universe have become inextricably linked in the modern scientific consciousness.
The significance of this mission lies in its ability to solve mysteries that its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, could not. While Hubble revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos using primarily visible and ultraviolet light, it faced a fundamental physical limitation when attempting to view the very first structures of the universe.
