Understanding the Science of Genetic Modification
At its core, genetic modification is a process that allows scientists to take a specific trait from one organism and move it into another. While farmers have been cross-breeding plants for thousands of years to get better harvests, that traditional method is slow and imprecise. Modern genetic engineering is much faster. Scientists identify a specific gene responsible for a helpful trait, such as the ability to survive a drought or resist a certain bug, and "cut and paste" that gene into the DNA of a crop like corn or soy.
