The Invisible Pull of the Group
Human beings are naturally social creatures. From the earliest days of our species, survival depended on the ability to live within a tribe, share resources, and work toward common goals. Because of this evolutionary history, the desire to fit in is woven into our biology. This tendency to change our behavior, attitudes, or beliefs to match those of a group is known as conformity. While many people like to think of themselves as independent thinkers who make their own choices, the psychology of conformity: why we follow the crowd suggests that our environment influences us more than we realize.
Conformity is not inherently good or bad.
