Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, such as wind, solar, or hydroelectric power. Unlike its predecessors, "grey" hydrogen, which is derived from natural gas through steam methane reforming (SMR), or "blue" hydrogen, which pairs SMR with carbon capture and storage (CCS), green hydrogen is a truly zero-carbon fuel. Its versatility allows it to function as a combustible fuel, a chemical reductant, and a high-capacity energy storage medium. However, the path to integrating green hydrogen into the global industrial fabric is fraught with technical, economic, and logistical hurdles that require a sophisticated understanding of both molecular chemistry and macro-economics.
