The Foundation of Food and Mind
For many decades, the conversation around health was divided into two distinct categories: the body and the mind. When people spoke about nutrition, they usually focused on physical goals such as losing weight, building muscle, or preventing heart disease. Mental health, on the other hand, was treated as something that happened exclusively in the brain, managed through therapy or medication. However, modern science has revealed that this division is an illusion. The role of nutrition and diet in maintaining mental wellbeing is one of the most significant discoveries in contemporary medicine. We now know that the food we put into our bodies has a direct, immediate, and long lasting impact on how we think, feel, and behave.
The human brain is an energy intensive organ. Despite making up only about two percent of a person's body weight, it consumes roughly twenty percent of the body's total calories. It requires a constant supply of high quality fuel to maintain focus, regulate emotions, and process information. When that fuel is of poor quality, the brain struggles to function. Just as a car might sputter or stall if given the wrong type of gasoline, the human mind experiences "stalls" in the form of mood swings, irritability, and brain fog when deprived of essential nutrients. This essay explores how the relationship between our digestive system and our nervous system forms the bedrock of our emotional stability.
